INTERRUPTED FERN
IN COLLABORATION WITH THE KENT STATE WICK POETRY CENTER AND CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
This poster was created with the help of the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State. They provided a poem to each designer at random that had been written about Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The poets were locals who had been inspired by the park to create a poetic inventory of the wildlife found there.
The poem featured is "Interrupted Fern" by Kathleen Cerveny. I was moved to create an illustration that highlighted the truly exciting features of a plant typically thought of as very simple. I pulled from specific words such as 'unfolding', 'pinnae', and 'unfurling' and aimed to create a forestlike atmosphere that would draw the viewer into the words in a physical way, stepping forward to read as if to enter the scene themselves.
